Understanding Surrender: The Art of Letting Go

Writing this blog about surrender has taken more time and thought than I expected. Just thinking about surrender is hard for me. Those who know me know I start things. I have done it if getting things going has required a fight or a struggle. I feel quite proud of my perseverance. Honestly, I love control, experience anxiety, and fear the unknown. I program my life to feel safe. Yes, I can try my best, but I cannot guarantee the results. That’s when surrender comes into my life.

I have misunderstood surrendering.

To surrender is to stop resisting, stop fighting, and quit forcing results. When a certain event overwhelms us and makes us doubt our coping mechanisms, it is time to surrender. With time, I have learned I cannot control all aspects of my life. There are things that I need to just let go of. I have no superpowers, and letting go is not giving up; it is giving in.

For me, surrender means giving oneself to something higher. Call it God, Nature, or the Universe, as ever you wish, and then let it go. Recognize that you have done your best, but the result does not depend on you.

To surrender seems to go against our occidental culture. It goes against what we have been taught in our family, school, or even while business training. Looks like if we surrender, we become purposeless. But surrender is not a lack of action. It is acknowledging that we have done what we have. We find no sense in forcing reality to fit our dreams. You can have both. Learn how and when to surrender while chasing your dreams.

Surrender is the no-strategy

Surrender starts where all other strategies end., surrender is the no strategy. Surrender arrives when we discover that we can’t see our way through where we are. There is no sense in losing energy in the process. We need to let it go. You did your part now, let the universe do its part. That is surrender for me.

When surrender arises is accompanied by a profound sense of relief. We give up the belief that we are so powerful that we can guarantee the results of our actions. We accept that even though we did everything well, the result does not depend only on us.

Seek help whenever you are stuck with something. You can’t find your way through? Psychotherapy helps. It helps you discover when to go on. It also guides you on when to let go and surrender.

Seek for help.

To surrender talks about our emotional health. We realize that we must surrender because we acknowledge that we have no more strategies left to achieve that goal. Surrender, at its core, is the willingness, the acceptance of what comes out.
